šŸ•Šļø Housing Freedom vs. Gentrification, Corrupt Politics & The Downfall of NYC

Do you own where you live?

If yes, that’s great.

You’re in a great position. One of autonomy and sovereignty.

You’re primed to live life on your own terms: no meddlesome, neglectful or abusive landlords in your world.

No worries about spontaneous rent increases – the roof over your head is yours, and the direction of your domestic life rests entirely in your hands.

Ownership is pride.

But if you’re like the growing number of renters (70% in NYC), this idea of ownership is merely a dream.

A dream deferred to the lowest end of our expectations.

A dream so cosmically distant that we’ve accepted a destiny of eternal rentership, fated to bleed our hard-earned cash to faceless corporate landlords – agents of insatiable greed.

ā€œHow could we think to own a home? We don’t have money for groceries or gas.ā€

There’s more to this life of deferment we live — our dreams are out there somewhere. They must be.

Why is Ownership + Housing So Important? šŸ”‘

I believe that housing is the foundation of all health.

It’s where you spend the most time.

Your home is where you sleep.

It’s where you eat, relax and think.

It may even be where you work.

Your home is the stronghold of your most intimate personal life.

But if you don’t own it, someone else’s interests take precedent over all of these crucial facets of your life.

Since the United States, the home of Freedom šŸ¦…dominates the rest of the world, it feels like we have everything we need to thrive.

But the truth is, we’re just surviving.

Things are expensive, the fabric of our society is dominated by tech and social media, the food our country produces is poisonous, our leaders are failing us, and we don’t make enough money to improve our situations.

On top of all that, we don’t own our homes, and we pay way too much to stay in them.

For now, the idea of Housing Freedom is a dream – one that must be believed in to be achieved – much like Civil Rights and Women’s Suffrage.

At one point, all of these ideas were distant, unfamiliar and unrealistic.

What turned dreams to reality was action.

That’s why the dream of freedom is achievable – because we can take action today, together.

There is more to life than our suffering. We deserve it all.

I have been to the mountaintop, and I have seen the other side.

Won’t you join us there?

It is the classic tale of the human experience –when good overcomes evil, greed and oppression, it becomes great.

Ownership and autonomy over your living situation is possible, and it’s closer than you may realize.

Affordable housing, operated and owned by the people, for the people, could become a reality with the passing of the Tenant Opportunity To Purchase Act (TOPA).

This means tens of millions across New York State could have a chance of owning the buildings they live in.

You won’t have to be a hot-shot millionaire to purchase real estate in New York.

The only requirement is that you aim to nurture your home and community.

New York serves as the frontier of housing policy, so even if you aren’t in the city, have faith that TOPA and community-owned housing will trend across other cities in the increasingly urban world.

Housing Freedom.

More people are moving to cities, less people are owning their homes, and even more are frustrated about their conditions and desire more.

They believe in Housing Freedom, and are willing to fight to secure it.

Of all the divisions and disunity in this modern world, there’s one thing we can all agree on: The Rent Is Too Damn High.

There is so much more ahead that awaits us through unity and belief in something bigger than ourselves: community.

Do you see why Housing Freedom is the next great revolution?

I’m glad you understand.

To emphasize these points, we’re going to begin 2025 with decisive action.

I’m organizing a rally around Housing Freedom, and I want you to be there.

We’ll be joined by Housing leaders, community members, journalists, politicians, friends and fellow tenants leading the revolution.

Expect to be empowered and educated, and to leave with new friends and connections.

The hottest new thing to do in NYC is fighting for Housing Freedom.

Join us and bring a friend.

Stuck in The Mud? Try the 3, 2, 1 Method 🚦

It’s nearly the end of January. How are your New Year’s resolutions going?

Whether you aimed for big or small changes this year, you should now have an idea of your pace.

If you’re stuck in the deliberation stage, contemplating how you should go about your goals, you’re like many people who obsess over planning things rather than acting on them.

But thinking isn’t very helpful for getting things done.

Luckily for you, I have a simple fix to this stalling of the engine.

The Countdown (3, 2, 1) Method 🚦

Here's how it works:

  • Identify the action: What do you want to do?
    • When you feel that hesitation or doubt creeping in about something you want to do, get ready to count down.
  • Count down: Count down from 5 to 1 out loud or in your head. You might want to vocalize the task you want to achieve.
  • Execute: After ā€˜one’, immediately move or speak to initiate the action or task you want to complete.
  • Start anywhere: Don’t worry about where to start. You’ve taken action, that’s the hard part. Any angle will work.
  • Tip: You can count down from a higher number too (some go all the way up to 30)

And that’s it. But what’s the idea behind the countdown method?

  • Breaking the hesitation cycle: Our brains often overthink and get stuck in analysis paralysis. The countdown interrupts that internal dialogue and triggers immediate action.
  • Overcoming fear: Fear often stems from the anticipation of taking action. The 5-Second Rule helps you bypass that fear and just do it.
  • Building momentum: By consistently taking action, even small ones, you build momentum and create a habit of moving forward.

The countdown method is highly effective for wiping away some of the anxiety of executing a new task.

Examples:

  • Getting out of bed in the morning: 3-2-1 – swing your legs over the side.
  • Making a phone call: 3-2-1, dial the number.
  • Starting a workout: 3-2-1, put on your workout clothes.
  • Before a sprint: 3-2-1 - Just go.

Knowledge is action potential

Action is action.

Ready to make something happen?

Don’t think, just start in 3, 2, 1 …
